Extremal properties of polynomial threshold functions
In this paper we give new extremal bounds on polynomial threshold function (PTF) representations of Boolean functions. Our results include the following: • Almost every Boolean function has PTF degree at most n2 + O( √ n log n). Together with results of Anthony and Alon, this establishes a conjecture of Wang and Williams [32] and Aspnes, Beigel, Furst, and Rudich [4] up to lower order terms. • ...
متن کاملPolynomial Threshold Functions and Boolean Threshold Circuits
We study the complexity of computing Boolean functions on general Boolean domains by polynomial threshold functions (PTFs). A typical example of a general Boolean domain is {1, 2}. We are mainly interested in the length (the number of monomials) of PTFs, with their degree and weight being of secondary interest. We show that PTFs on general Boolean domains are tightly connected to depth two thre...
متن کاملBounding the Sensitivity of Polynomial Threshold Functions
We give the first nontrivial upper bounds on the average sensitivity and noise sensitivity of polynomial threshold functions. More specifically, for a Boolean function f on n variables equal to the sign of a real, multivariate polynomial of total degree d, we prove • The average sensitivity of f is at most O(n1−1/(4d+6)). (We also give a combinatorial proof of the bound O(n1−1/2 d ).) • The noi...
متن کاملHarmonic Analysis of Polynomial Threshold Functions
The analysis of linear threshold Boolean functions has recently attracted the attention of those interested in circuit complexity as well as of those interested in neural networks. Here a generalization of linear threshold functions is defined, namely, polynomial threshold functions, and its relation to the class of linear threshold functions is investigated. A Boolean function is polynomial th...
متن کاملExtremal properties of rate distortion functions
At a recent workshop (Hakone, Japan, July 1{2, 1988) I. Csiszz ar stated that inspite of strong eeorts the following question had been waiting for an answer for many years. It is true that for xed distortion level the rate{distortion function R(P;) has in the distribution P no local maxima with value diierent from the global maximum? We show that in general the answer is negative. However, the ...
